Report Excerpt

The Web CMS Report 2008 looks at... Content Server's Web Services API

"Java APIs are also exposed as Web Services, with SOAP bindings and WSDL files automatically configured. Like other vendors, however, results in the field using these new APIs have been mixed at best. For one thing, the WSDL files point to JSP pages (so that FatWire can access its tag library) and not actual Java APIs. This limits substantially what you can do and brooks performance problems as well..."

CMS Watch Web Content Management Vendor List

More than 1000 products purport to manage Web content. To make your life easier, we list only 40 of them, divided into 6 categories. These are not the "best" Web CMS tools, simply -- in our judgment -- the most significant today.

You can find a longer discussion of these categories -- along with comparative evaluations of these tools -- in The Web CMS Report. Note that products indicating "European Edition" are evaluated only in that edition of the Report.

Enterprise Platforms

Large-scale platforms typically marketed in multidimensional "suites" that span many function points, but may be less well-suited for straightforward Web CMS projects. Expect about US $200-250k+ for entry-level licensing.

Upper Tier

These are well-established web content management vendors that target large departments and corporations. Expect base licensing of $US 125-175k for most implementations.

Mid-Market Mainstream

These packages target mid-market firms or enterprise departments. They typically carry $50-125k licensing fees, and usually trade off ease-of-implementation for fewer integration facilities.

Mid-Market Challengers

Although lower priced (typically $15k to $60k), these packages begin to offer customization opportunities and XML support.

Hosted Services

These are hosted CMS packages. For functionality and price, they tend to fall into mid-market range.

Commercial Open Source

These are tools that have an open source code-base, but a single dominant commercial firm backing the project.

Open Source

The packages are available under open-source licensing terms and frequently bundle portal and community functions with the CMS.
