Report Excerpt

The Enterprise Portals Report 2009 looks at... Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SPI

"This is important, because IT often considers MOSS (or at least WSS) as "free," and therefore freely deployable internally. The reality is that uncontrolled proliferation can create the kinds of costs and management headaches IT was hoping to avoid in the first place. "

(p. 148)

80:20 releases free compliance software for SharePoint

12-Sep-2005

Records management and compliance is one of the dullest topics on the planet, yet as I never tire of saying, "it's important!" Thing is, even though even small companies are grudgingly starting to think about compliance nobody really wants to pay for it, and efforts to kick start such projects often lose steam at the first corner. So I am genuinely quite excited that 80:20 Software from Australia has announced new compliance software to support the MS SharePoint environment....for free. It seems to be pretty comprehensive and certainly a threat to the likes of Meridio who currently sell RM packages for the SharePoint environment at enterprise-level prices. 80:20 Software claims that they are intent to make their money from providing value-add services. The company clearly needs volume to make this work for them, but with 30 million seats of SharePoint out there they have picked the right platform. It will be interesting to see if this spawns others to copy the approach and how the other RM players might respond. I would be very interested indeed in hearing back from any of you who decide to test out this product. User testing will tell whether there really is such a thing as a free lunch.
