The Enterprise Search Report 2008 looks at... Oracle: Secure Enterprise Search

"For now, it's a strong contender for those seeking secure search without the complications of the toolboxes IBM, Autonomy, and FAST have put on the market. You should be aware, though, that the interface is firmly Oracle-branded - if you want a purple Model-T Ford, you'll have to spray-paint your own Web Services application on top of it."

Oracle releases enterprise search product

03-Mar-2006

Oracle announced its standalone enterprise search system at Oracle World this week. Dubbed "Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10g," it costs $30,000 per processor and fills a gap in Oracle's enterprise software line up. The product will include portions of the categorization technology Oracle acquired from TripleHop in 2005. Previously, Oracle had no standalone enterprise search system, although Enterprise Search Report readers know that Oracle has long boasted powerful and well-regarded search technology. Meanwhile, IBM offers its Omnifind search system with WebSphere, and Microsoft's next generation of servers "bakes" search into the fabric of SharePoint and other software. Now only SAP lacks a standalone enterprise search solution (SAP is enhancing its "Trex" search system and will surely respond to the new challenge posed by Oracle and other vendors). Oracle's emphasis on "secure" underscores the "secret sauce" for the new standalone system. Security issues continue to bubble up with enterprise search systems. Look for increasing competitive pressure within this sector. The good news is that some vendors will offer special incentives to adopt their technology. The bad news: all the marketing hyperbole makes it difficult to figure out which of these sophisticated and complex systems will work best for you.
